Byte Stride
Reinterpret image bytes with stride offsets so rows, colours, and memory order misalign.
Add Byte Stride
Open an image or build the source composition first. Put this effect after the content it should process in stack processing order. Choose Glitch → Byte & Color Damage → Byte Stride in the effects picker, or search for Byte Stride with Cmd/Ctrl + F. Select the new layer in Layers to open its Effect Panel.
Choose the reinterpretation
Select Mode and Bit Format, then change Stride Error in small increments. The source rows and channels become misaligned.
Find a useful offset
Compare several nearby stride values: a small change can produce a large visual jump. Use footer opacity or a mask to keep selected original regions.

Compare and finish
Toggle the layer eye to compare with the incoming composition. Use the Effect Panel footer for opacity and blend mode, or add a mask to limit the affected area. In Video or Live, use the function menu on a supported control to add keyframes or a driver.

| Control | What it does | Values and animation |
|---|---|---|
| Bit Format | 16-bit framebuffer format — fewer bits = harsher banding | 16-bit (R5G6B5) / 15-bit (R5G5B5) / 12-bit (R4G4B4) / 8-bit (R3G3B2) Default: 16-bit (R5G6B5) Discrete keyframes |
| Stride Error | how far the byte read drifts — shears the channels into rainbow | -50 to 50 %; -256 to 256 px (typed input: -2000 to 2000) Default: 2 % Continuous keyframes |
| Mode | waterfall reads the bytes at a wrong offset; 16-bit repacks each channel | Waterfall / 16-bit (R5G6B5) Default: Waterfall Discrete keyframes |
